1．They always tell you what a picture is‘about’.（他們）總是告訴你一張畫的“意思”是什么。

This is a book about Australia.

這是一本關于澳大利亞的書。

They are talking about modern art.

他們在談論現(xiàn)代藝術。

課文中這句話可以直譯為：他們總是告訴你某一幅畫是“關于”什么的，也就是一幅畫的“意思”是什么。about放在引號里，一是指這些人談論畫的時候經(jīng)常用到這個詞，二是表示一種諷刺，因為有些畫沒有任何“意思”。

2．They are just pretty patterns.它們就是些好看的圖案。

just在此處指“只是”、“僅僅（是）”，而不是指“剛才”、“正好”、“正是：

It was just a wrong number.

這只是一個錯誤的號碼。（即只不過是撥錯了號碼）

It's just six o'clock.

正好6點。

I've just heard the news.

我剛剛聽到這個消息。

3．We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. 我們喜愛它們就像我們喜愛漂亮的窗簾布一樣。

in the same way that/as是個連接短語，用于表示比較，可譯為“像／和……一樣”：

She walks in the same way that/as her sister did.

5．…she always tells me whether my pictures are good or not.

連接詞 whether…or not可以表示選擇：

I don't know whether you are interested (in it) or not.

我不知道你（對它）是否感興趣。

You must help him, whether you like him or not.

不管你是否喜歡他，你（都）必須幫助他。

6．She looked at it critically for a moment. 她用挑剔的目光看了一會兒。

for a moment為固定短語，表示“片刻”、“一會兒”：

They looked at each other for a moment.

他們互相對視了一會兒。

7．It's all right. 還可以吧。

all right為固定短語，在這里表示“令人滿意的”、“不錯的”：

The performance of the Greenwood Boys at the Workers' Club was all right.

“綠林少年”演唱團在工人俱樂部的那場演出還不錯。

all right還可以表達許多其他意思，如表示同意等。

語法 Grammar in use

一般現(xiàn)在時（cf．第2課語法）

（1）一般現(xiàn)在時可以用于表述現(xiàn)在的特征或狀態(tài)：

I am an art student and I paint a lot of pictures.

我是個學美術的學生，畫了很多畫。（目前狀態(tài)）

它也經(jīng)常用于表述經(jīng)常性或習慣性的動作，或帶有普遍性的情況，頻度副詞可有可無：

Many people pretend that they understand modern art.

有很多人裝成很懂現(xiàn)代藝術的樣子。（普遍情況，不帶頻度副詞）

They always tell you what a picture is‘about’.

他們總是告訴你一張畫的“意思”是什么。（經(jīng)常性動作，帶頻度副詞always）

一般現(xiàn)在時還用于表示普遍性真理：

Summer follows spring.

春去夏來。

（2）有些表示狀態(tài)和感覺的動詞通常用于一般現(xiàn)在時。這些動詞

一般不用于進行時：appear，appreciate，be，believe，notice，feel，find，forget，resemble，hear，know，like，look like，remember，see，think，understand等：

He's listening to that music! He must like it!

1．notice

（1）vt．注意到，察覺到（不用于進行時）：

You never notice what's going on around you.

你從來不注意身邊發(fā)生的事。

Did you notice him leaving?

他離開的時候你發(fā)現(xiàn)了嗎？

I've noticed that it is warmer here than in England.

我發(fā)現(xiàn)這里比英國暖和。

（2）n．注意，察覺：

The girl in red caught his notice.

那位穿紅衣服的姑娘引起了他的注意。

（3）n．（書面的）通知，布告，海報：

I know there's a meeting, because someone put up a notice outside the Town Hall.

2．hang vt．，vi．

（1）（將……）懸掛，吊：

I'm hanging this picture on the wall.

我正在把這幅畫掛到墻上去。

Will you please hang the coat?

A pretty curtain hangs over the window.

3．upside down

（1）上下顛倒：

When Percy Buttons stands on his head, everything appears upside down to him.

（2）亂七八糟，混亂不堪：

My little boy always makes the room upside down.
