1．A short while ago, however, he became a bus driver and be has not regretted it．然而就在前不久，他開上了公共汽車，也并不為此而感到后悔。

（1）while作名詞表示“一會兒”、“（一段）時間”時常與a連用，有時也與the，this等連用：

They haven't seen each other for a long while.

他們有很長時間沒見面了。

Have you been in Australia all this while?

這段時間你一直在澳大利亞嗎？

I saw her a short while ago.

我剛才還見到她了。

（2）句尾的it代指 he became a bus driver這件事。

2．far more exciting，令人興奮得多。

在形容詞和副詞的比較級與最高級前面，可以用far（相當于much）來表示強調：

It's for/ much colder today than it was yesterday.

今天比昨天要冷得多。

Houses are far/ much more expensive these days.

如今的房價貴多了。

This is(by) far the most expensive bicycle in the shop.

這是這家商店里最貴的自行車。（比其他的要貴好多）

3．… saw two thieves rush out of a shop and run towards a waiting car．……
看到兩個小偷從一家商店里沖出來，奔向等在那里的一輛汽車。

（1） see和其他一些感知動詞（如 feel， hear，notice， smell， watch 等）
可以用在動詞+名詞或代詞賓語+不帶to的不定式結構中；

I saw him climb through the window.

我看見他爬進窗戶。

這些動詞的賓語相當于不定式的主語，上句即：

I saw that he climbed through the window.

在課文中的這句話中，rush和run是two thieves的兩個連續(xù)的動作。

（2） waiting為現在分詞作定語，表示“等待著的”、“等在那里的”。

4．The one with the money got such a fright that he dropped the bag．拿錢的那個小偷嚇得把提包都扔了。

（1）with 表示“帶著”、“拿著”。

（2） such（a）+名詞+ that與 so+形容詞+ that一樣，后面引導的是結果狀語從句，
通常譯為“如此……以致……”：

They are such wonderful players that they will surely win the game.

他們都是如此出色的運動員，所以肯定能在這場比賽中獲勝。

5．As the thieves were trying to get away in their car, Roy drove his bus into the back of it. 當那兩個小偷企圖乘車逃跑時，羅伊駕駛他的公共汽車撞在了那輛車的后尾上。

（2）句尾的it指小偷的那輛小汽車； back 指車的“后部”、“尾部”；drive into 的原義為“把（汽車）開進”，
這里是指撞上。

6．the battered car，
那輛被撞壞的車。

battered 為過去分詞，作定語，相當于 the car which was battered。
類似的有 a broken window等。

語法 Grammar in use

復習一般現在時、一般過去時、現在完成時和被動語態(tài)（cf．第26課、第27課、第  28課、第  31課與第  34課語法）

一般現在時通常用于表示目前的狀況或動作以及習慣性的動作；一般過去時則指過去某個時間所做的動作，不強調與現在的關系；詞組used to只能用于過去時，表示過去有過而現在已沒有的習慣等；
現在完成時通常指過去發(fā)生的但與現在有聯系的動作。這幾種時態(tài)在一定的上下文中可以同時出現：

John hasn't recognised that woman yet. Do you recognise her?

約翰還沒有認出那位婦女。你能認出她嗎？

在第34課的語法中，我們講到被動語態(tài)的用法之一是為了突出主語并避免用不明確的詞作主語

詞匯學習 Word study

1．rush

（1）vi．沖，奔：

Two thieves rushed out of a shop.

兩個小偷從一家商店里沖了出來。

While I was talking to Frank, a man rushed into the room．

我正和弗蘭克談話時，一個人沖進了房間。

（2）vt．，vi．倉促行事，倉促完成；趕緊做：

Roy rushed (through) his lunch and left for the station.

羅伊匆匆吃完午飯就去車站了。

Tom always rushes his homework on Sunday evenings.

湯姆總是在星期天晚上趕做他的家庭作業(yè)。

（3）n．猛沖，奔：

Roy made a rush at the thieves.

羅伊沖向小偷們。

2．straight

（1）adj．直的，筆直的：

He drew a straight line on the paper.

他在紙上畫了一條直線。

This road isn't straight.

這條路不直。

（2） adv．筆直地：

He walked straight on.

他一直往前走。

You'll see a tower straight ahead.

你會看到正前方有個塔。

（3）adv．徑直地，直接地：

John always goes straight home after work.

約翰下班后總是直接回家。

Roy drove the bus straight at the thieves.

羅伊開車直沖竊賊而去。

3．such與so

such和so都可以用于表示程度，但so 只能作副詞和連詞，such則是形容詞，因此so通常位于形容詞、副詞之前，而such只能位于名詞之前：

引導結果狀語從句時，它們的結構分別為“such+（a）+名詞+that”和“so+ 形容詞+that”：

It was such a cold evening that no one went out.

那天晚上太冷了，所以誰也沒有出門。

It was so cold that no one went out.

天太冷了，所以誰也沒有出門。

such 除了表示“這樣的”、“如此的”等意思外，還可以表示“像這一類的”， so則不能表示后一種意思：

He often talks about such things.

他經常談論這類事。
