Lesson 44 Through the forest

Mrs.Anne Sterling did not think of the risk she was taking when she ran through a forest after two men.They had rushed up to her while she was having a picnic at the edge of a forest with her children and tried to steal her handbag.In the struggle the strap broke and, with the bag in their possession,both men started running through the trees.Mrs.Sterling got so angry that she ran after them. She was soon out of breath, but she continued to run. When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, so she ran straight at them. The men got such a fright that they dropped the bag and ran away. 'The strap needs mending,' said Mrs. Sterling later,'but they did not steal anything.'

Notes on the text 課文注釋

1 the risk she was taking,她所冒的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)，take the risk 有“冒......風(fēng)險(xiǎn)”的意思。

2 when she ran through a forest after two men,當(dāng)她穿過森林追趕兩個男人時。run after,追趕。

3 with the bag ih their possession,包落到他們手里。in one's possession,為...所有。

4 Mrs.Sterling got so angry that she ran after them.斯特林夫人非常氣憤，向著他們追過去。句中含有so...that....的句型，意思是：“如此......以至于...” 。

5 out of breath,喘不上氣，上氣不接下氣。

6 When she caught up with them,當(dāng)她追上他們時。catch up with,趕上，追上。

8 The strap needs mending,背帶需要修理。當(dāng)need作“需要”講時，后面接的動名詞有被動的含義。

參考譯文

安。斯特林夫人在穿過森林追趕兩個男人時，她并沒有考慮到所冒的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)。剛才，當(dāng)她和孩子們正在森林邊上野餐的時候，這兩個人沖到她跟前，企圖搶走她的手提包。在爭搶中，手提包的帶斷了，包落入這兩個人手里，他們拔腿跑進(jìn)了樹林。斯特林夫人非常氣憤，向著他們追了過去。只追了一會兒便上氣不接下氣了，但她還是繼續(xù)追趕。當(dāng)她趕上他們時，發(fā)現(xiàn)他們已經(jīng)坐了下來，正翻著包里的東西。于是她直沖過去。這兩個人嚇了一跳，仍下提包逃跑了。“ 這提包需要修理，”斯特林夫人事后說道，“不過他們什么也沒偷走。”
