Lesson 50 Taken for a ride

Why did the write not get off the bus at Woodford Green?

I love travelling in the country, but I don't like losing my way.

I went on an excursion recently, but my trip took me longer than I expected.

'I'm going to Woodford Green,' I said to the conductor as I got on the bus,'but I don't know where it is.'

'I'll tell you where to get off,' answered the conductor.

I sat in the front of the bus to get a good view of the countryside. After some time, the bus stopped. Looking round, I realized with a shock that I was the only passenger left on the bus.

'You'll have to get off here,' the conductor said. 'This is as far as we go.'

'Is this Woodford Green?' I asked.

'Oh dear,' said the conductor suddenly. ' I forgot to put you off.'

'It doesn't matter,' I said, ' I'll get off here.'

'We're going back now,' said the conductor,

'Well, in that case, I prefer to stay on the bus,' I answered.

Notes on the text 課文注釋

1 標(biāo)題“Taken for a ride"中take ... for 是“把......當(dāng)作.....”的意思。taken for a ride 意思是“就是當(dāng)作是一次乘車兜風(fēng)”;take sb. for a ride 又作“欺騙”講，因此taken for 也有“上了當(dāng)”的含義。

3 go on an excursion.作一次短距離的旅行。

4 get on the bus,上公共汽車。

5 I'll tell you where to get off.我告訴你哪里下車。

參考譯文

我喜歡在鄉(xiāng)間旅行，但卻不愿意迷路。最近我作了一次短途旅行，但這次旅行所花費(fèi)的時(shí)間比我預(yù)計(jì)的要長。

“我要去伍德福草地，”我一上車就對(duì)售票員說，“但我不知道它在哪兒。”

“我來告訴您在哪兒下車，”售票員回答說。

我坐在汽車的前部，以便飽覽農(nóng)村風(fēng)光。過了一些時(shí)候，車停了。我環(huán)視了一下身旁，驚奇地發(fā)現(xiàn)車?yán)锞椭皇Ｎ乙粋�(gè)乘客了。

“您得在這里下車，”售票員說，“我們的車就到此為止了。”

“這里是伍德福草地嗎？”我問道。

“哎呀，”售票員突然說，“我忘了讓您下車了.”

“沒關(guān)系，”我說，“我就在這下車吧。”

“我們現(xiàn)在要返回去，”售票員說。

“好吧，既然如此，我還是留在車上吧。”我回答說。
